The Client
A student embarking on higher education in Malaysia has a chance to enter a promising career in the future. The top three courses often associated with higher education in Malaysia are Computer Science, Business Management, and Accounting and Finance. However, universities provide students with more than just a degree; they offer a comprehensive, life-shaping experience that equips students with the skills, knowledge, and networks needed in the next stage of life.
The University of Nottingham (UoN) is a reputable private institution with global campuses in the United Kingdom, China, and Malaysia. Currently serving 25 years in Malaysia, the university is ranked as number 34 amongst the listed 70 universities in Malaysia and holds an 108 rank globally. The Malaysia campus is currently located in Semenyih with a leading reputation for social science, science and engineering research.
The Challenge
Malaysia has 20 public universities and institutes and 47 private universities. Due to its affordability and diverse programmes, Malaysia is a highly favoured Asian study abroad destination. International student enrolments have been increasing—it is expected that Malaysia will receive 250,000 in 2025, with a majority from China.
Universities must promote their best student experience, secure incoming student intakes, and position themselves as hubs of world-class education and research to remain at the forefront of the global education sector. However, even the strongest institutions risk being overlooked, falling short of becoming a student’s first choice.
Like any other higher education institution, UNM faces one of the biggest challenges: a 12.8% decrease in student intakes in polytech universities since 2023. The overall decline is due to a lack of interest in STEM among school students. This trend presents a critical action for UNM to reignite interest in STEM and redefine its appeal to future-ready students.
Another key issue lies in the perceived value of qualifications and additional accreditations, such as those recognized by the UK Engineering Council or the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM). For many prospective students, the assurance that their chosen program leads to credible, industry-recognised certifications is a decisive factor. Without clear visibility of these accreditations, there is a risk of diminishing interest.
Our Approach
To support the University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) in addressing its key challenges, the Pixel Pictures Production team focused on strengthening UNM’s market presence while highlighting core strengths such as the global UNM alumni network, research and knowledge exchange initiatives and more.
For video productions, our team worked hand-in-hand with the lecturers, students and university staff involved on production day to bring the creative vision as accurately in depicting UNM’s area of excellence – their research outreach initiatives. By capturing real-time interactions and cutting-edge facilities available in UNM, the video aimed to reignite interest in STEM by making the field feel exciting, innovative, and deeply relevant to future-ready learners. Moreover, positioning UNM as a high-quality institution equipped with the best resources reaffirms its status as a top choice for students.
Beyond academics, we turned our lenses toward the vibrant student clubs and societies that shape UNM’s dynamic campus culture. Our team believed that capturing scenes that reflects a thriving community would showcase a well-rounded student experience.
Each project began with a detailed proposal covering moodboards, lighting and backdrop plans, production guidelines, and creative concepts. The Pixel Pictures team also conducted on-site visits to assess locations and ensure smooth production through to post-production. We highly believe in fostering a collaborative atmosphere on set, making sure everyone feels confident and comfortable in front of the camera. This positive energy also allowed us to capture its people's authenticity.
Having served the University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) for several years in multiple projects, we have built a deep understanding of the institution’s brand, values and aspirations in education. Every collaboration is refined and reaffirmed with strategies, ensuring their voice and vision remain competitive in the higher education landscape.
